James Deitz
Marimba
James Deitz, 21, has been a timpani and percussion major at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music, with plans to graduate in May 2004. Before his Curtis study, Mr. Deitz attended weekend sessions at the Juilliard Pre-College Division. He substitutes with such Philadelphia-based ensembles as the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, the Philadelphia Singers, The Haddonfield Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra's Sound All Around Percussion Group. As a duo winner of the Albert Greenfield Concerto Competition, he and his colleague, Pius Cheung, gave their Philadelphia Orchestra premier at the Kimmel Center in October of 2003. A repeat performance of Keiko Abe's "Prism Rhapsody for two marimbas and orchestra" is scheduled for the summer of 2004 at the Mann Center for Performing Arts. Mr. Deitz's major teachers include the late Michael Bookspan, Don S. Liuzzi, David Fein and marimba artist Nancy Zeltsman. In his leisure time, Mr. Deitz enjoys literature, writing poetry, playing board games and viewing Kubrick films.
