Lionel Party
Harpsichord
Trained first in his native Chile, then in Germany, Lionel Party came in 1970 as a Fulbright scholar to study harpsichord with Albert Fuller at the Juilliard School where he obtained his doctorate in 1976. He currently teaches baroque music and harpsichord at both Juilliard and The Curtis Institute. Mr. Party has played solo recitals in New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, Frick Collection and Alice Tully Hall and in Boston, Washington and other U.S. cities. He has appeared often with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Waverly Consort and Solisti New York, among other ensembles. Celebrating Bach's 300th anniversary, he played harpsichord concertos with the Handel and Haydn Society at Boston's Symphony Hall. In 1991, he was soloist with the New York Philharmonic, of which he is a member, under Erich Leinsdorf in Poulenc's Concert Champêtre and in 2001 under Sir Colin Davis in Frank Martin’s Petite Symphonie Concertante. Abroad he has performed with the English Chamber Orchestra, German Bach Soloist, South German Chamber Orchestra, Collegium Instrumentale of the Gewandhaus of Leipzig, and has given solo recitals in many European and Canadian cities and his native Santiago. His many recordings bear Desmar, Musical Heritage Society, Smithsonian, Titanic, Olufsen, and Orion labels.
