In 1994, Makoto became the first marimbist to win the prestigious Young Concert Artists International Auditions. He has performed in 40 of the 50 states as concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. Makoto has established himself as a dedicated champion of the music of our time, and many composers have written pieces for him. Born in Kobe, Japan, he earned both Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Musashino College in Tokyo and continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he was named an Associate. His recent honors include a National Arts Festival Award from the Japanese Agency of Cultural Affairs. His latest CD Bach Beat was released this year by Kleos Classics. His three other CDs--Ritual Protocol, Triple Jump and Marimba Works by Tanabe -- are devoted to works written for him. A television portrait of Makoto was broadcast nationally on CBS Sunday Morning.
