Between 1724 and 1726 Handel composed nine sonatas for a solo instrument and continuo. Three are for violin, four are for recorder, and two have no indication of instrumentation. Why he chose to write such a substantial group of chamber works is not clear, but they may be associated with his duties as music-master to the Princesses Anne and Caroline, daughters of King George II. The sonata is in four movements marked; Grave, Allegro, Alla Siciliana and Allegro.
